Dr Ashok K R
I never had an intention to join MBBS. My dream was to become a journalist. Fortunately or unfortunately i scored very high marks in PUC / class 12 and i had only two choices – Medical or engineering. I joined MBBS; can’t quote the exact reason for this choice. I decided to select Pre clinical or paraclinical subject for post graduation when i was in second year. I wanted to opt Forensic Medicine in Post graduate counselling, but i didn’t get that seat as it filled up fast. I selected my second choice Anatomy.
When i joined the post graduate course there were no students. During that free time i was introduced to the Histology technique and pink – blue stain by Subash, attender cum Technician at that time. The skill of cutting the sections at 5 – 8 micrometer and passing it through various process to dehydrate hydrate and stain interested me. The final step of seeing beautifully stained cells under microscope made me to fall in love with Histology.
With the arrival of students dissection and reading Gross Anatomy was a routine. Interaction with the students made me to realise that for a Teacher Anatomy is better than Forensic Medicine. The topic which bores me in Anatomy is neuroanatomy. There is much to read but less to see unless you are in some neuroanatomy research institute. Embryology is good to read, who is not interested in their formation!, but again less to see. My journey of teaching Undergraduates is just 7 years old. My students have taught me the art of teaching and they have fine tuned my knowledge with their questions and answers.
This blog Bit of Anatomy is an attempt to share my knowledge. Initially i will be writing about Histology. Various tissues will be briefly explained with diagrams drawn with the help of softwares and will post the photos of slides whenever available. I am aware that i am not telling anything new here, there are many standard text books which teaches us everything. The online presence of basic topics in simplified form will definitely benefit the newbies who find it difficult to follow in text books.
Since i work under RGUHS, Karnataka i will be following their curriculum. If you find some topic is missing please mail me at hingyake@gmail.com.
